Discover a place steeped in history
More than a century ago, young workers at Chronicle Mill embraced the emerging technology of the textile industry and revolutionized the small town of Belmont into a center of innovation. Once again, Chronicle Mill is reshaping Belmont, bringing apartments and shops to the preserved mill, where exposed brick walls, original maple hardwood floors and timber beams remain.
Chronicle Mill will serve as a catalyst for growth, connecting Belmont’s downtown to the River District and surrounding neighborhoods. Secure your spot at Chronicle Mill.
RETAIL OPPORTUNITIES LIVE AT CHRONICLE MILL
1902
Founded in 1902 by textile pioneers R.L. Stowe, Sr., and Samuel Pinckney Stowe, Chronicle Mill was Belmont’s first textile mill, transforming it from a sleepy, rural town into a textile hub. It was named after Maj. William Chronicle, a Revolutionary War hero who lived nearby and was killed in the Battle of Kings Mountain, a turning point in the war.
1912
Initially powered by steam, Chronicle Mill eventually introduced electrical power to increase productivity and expanded the facility over the years. Most workers lived near the mill and their children attended Chronicle Mill School.
2010
As textile manufacturing waned in the late 20th century, Chronicle Mill endured until 2010, when the last yarn was produced within its historic brick walls.
2013
In 2013, the mill was purchased by the Church family who recognized the mill’s historic and architectural value and envisioned preserving the dynamic space for a new generation of Belmont residents and shop owners to enjoy.
2020
Construction and restoration of the Mill is currently underway and will be complete in 2023. The first retail spaces are slated to open in 2022.
